The primary goal of the research project titled “De-intellectualizing the Mind: Philosophy of Pragmatism and the Contemporary Paradigm Shift in Cognitive Science” is to help develop, from the perspective of pragmatism, the conceptual background for the ongoing paradigm shift in contemporary cognitive science which has been called the “4E” (embodied, embedded, enactive, extended) approach to cognition. This overall goal will be achieved in two steps: i) the philosophy of pragmatism will be...The primary goal of the research project titled “De-intellectualizing the Mind: Philosophy of Pragmatism and the Contemporary Paradigm Shift in Cognitive Science” is to help develop, from the perspective of pragmatism, the conceptual background for the ongoing paradigm shift in contemporary cognitive science which has been called the “4E” (embodied, embedded, enactive, extended) approach to cognition. This overall goal will be achieved in two steps: i) the philosophy of pragmatism will be firmly established as one of the main, although sometimes unacknowledged, theoretical sources of the “4E turn” in cognitive science; ii) based on the work of pragmatist philosophers like George H. Mead, John Dewey, William James, and Charles S. Peirce, the applicant will endeavor to propose new solutions to three problem-areas which still need to be clarified within the “4E” approach to cognitive science.
