“Development of new modules for international bachelor and master programmes in
sustainable tourism management”
This multi-country project is designed to modernize the curricula with respect to the Bologna Process
in selected institutes of higher education in all three participating states Azerbaijan, Armenia and
Georgia. It addresses courses in the field tourism which is a regional priority for the Caucasus region.
New modules for international bachelor and master programmes in sustainable tourism management
(STM) are developed, implemented and accredited with the ECTS.
To enhance the future employability of the graduates, a greater practical relevance is integrated into
the curricula by practical placements in enterprises and by doing practical research projects.
Stronger cooperation between HEI and SMEs will be achieved by establishing contacts to the tourism
business sector and enterprises
The interdisciplinary approach to sustainable tourism development is enhanced by involving universities
from different academic fields such as agricultural, tourism and business studies which will
include the new modules into their curricula.
The project will raise the awareness among the participating HEI that 1. new and higher qualified
human re-sources need to be developed in the field of tourism for the Caucasus region and 2. sustainable
tourism is an interdisciplinary field which comprises/combines economical, ecological, social,
and juridical aspects, topics which will be included in the newly developed modules.
The Caucasus region is politically diverse but should be touristically jointly developed. Therefore, the
project is designed to foster the networking and the mutual understanding between the HEI from
AZ, AM and GE as well as the between the EU and Caucasus partners. It will also be reflected in the
introduction of a module on intercultural communication.
As outcomes modules on sustainable tourism management will be created according to European
education standards and requirements, including It- technologies, intercultural communication and
languages. Before-hand a common understanding of sustainability and regional development has to
be achieved. Internationally standardized information technologies will be applied for communication
and eLearning purposes. A concept with new methods and materials for study, teacher and
tutor training, practical placement for students in the tourism sector as well as the implementation
of a quality assurance system will be developed.
Regular monitoring of the milestones will guarantee the accomplishment of the aims as well as the
implementation of an eLearning platform the dissemination of the results of this project.
The sustainability of the project will be secured beyond the duration of project by strengthening the
international scientific cooperation on a permanent base, by making the qualification in the sector of
STM more com-parable and by ensuring the accreditation of the modules.
