However, to promote an optimized and safe application of nanomaterials (NM) in life sciences, a mechanistic understanding of processes at the nano-bio interface is a must. Although, microorganisms, such as fungi and bacteria, as well as the human microbiome are known determinants of human physiology and disease, the impact of the biomolecule corona for nanomaterial-microbiome-host-interactions has surprisingly not been studied so far. These interplays may not only be relevant for pathologies, such as allergies, but also for vaccination and nano-based drugs. Interestingly, our preliminary work indeed demonstrates that the protein corona critically affects the interaction of NMs with fungal spores and bacteria, strongly supporting our hypothesis on the so far unrecognized relevance of the protein corona.» weiterlesen» einklappen
