Kurzfassung

Up to one half of patients with diabetes mellitus suffers from recurrent corneal erosions and ulcers, which causes large socio-economic problems. The aim of the proposed project is to develop a novel method to accelerate wound healing of the corneal epithelium by applying a novel principle: The generation of metabolic energy in the extracellular space via topical application of eye drops containing the energy-delivering physiological polymer inorganic polyphosphate (polyP).
