The objective of the proposed research project (pict.1) is to investigate the structure of competence- and control beliefs (Core Self-Evaluations) in sub-Saharan Africa depending on cultural specificity. Compared to Western Europe, the sub-Saharan African context ascribes spiritual and social (interrelational) aspects a higher relevance to attitudes and actions.

Typical outcomes, that are linked to well-developed competence- and control beliefs (e.g. learning motivation, job performance, coping and well-being) should not be affected when assessed in a culturally fair manner. A theoretical basis for understanding the structure and functioning of competence- and control beliefs in sub-Saharan Africa is provided, to pave the
