Reperfusion therapies have significantly reduced mortality of patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). In meta-analyses of randomized trials, primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has been shown to further reduce mortality compared to fibrinolytic therapy. However, amongst patients with STEMI undergoing primary PCI mortality remains between 4-6%.
