Since the first description of a successful platelet transfusion in 1963 by Freireich, blood component preparation rapidly developed. Two methods of platelet preparation currently exist: pooled platelet (derived from buffy coat or platelet rich plasma) and apheresis platelet concentrates. All over the world many studies had been performed to analyze which product should be preferred. The results for in-vivo and in-vitro quality are inconsistent and the answer remains still unclear.
