N-acetylcysteine and Methylprednisolone in Subarachnoid Aneurysmal Hemorrhage (NAC-MEP) in rats

Laufzeit: 01.01.2017 - 31.12.2018

Kurzfassung

Inflammation and lipid-peroxidation have been shown to contribute considerably to post-subarachnoidal hemorrhage (SAH) morbidity and mortality. N-acetylcysteine and methylprednisolone can possibly attenuate both effects and have therefore the potential to reduce complication rates after SAH.

Primary objectives:
To determine the efficacy of N-acetylcysteine (NAC), methylprednisolone (MEP), and a combination of both on neurobehavioral tests in a rat-SAH model 2 weeks after the insult.

Secondary objectives:
-To test if treatment with either or both substances results in a lower incidence of delayed cerebral ischemia (=cerebral infarction, DCI)

a lower vasospasm grade as determined by measuring the diameter of intracerebral arteries at day 6

a lower rate of apoptosis

an upregulation of antioxidant status
