The aim of this innovative teaching project is to strengthen the competence of prospective doctors in one of the most stressful situations in everyday clinical life: talking to the relatives of patients in the dying phase, informing them about imminent death and the changes that come with it.
A good training in medical conversation in the dying phase is of particular importance not only for the well-being of the patients but also of their relatives and the medical staff themselves, especially against the background of the expected increase in the mortality rate and the lack of specialists. Communicating about dying is one of the most existential conversations, with the highest degree of difficulty in conducting the conversation. The prerequisite for learning these advanced skills in the teaching project is a basic qualification, which medical students in Mainz acquire during their undergraduate studies. The training in the teaching project takes place longitudinally immediately before and during the practical year (PJ). Core elements are knowledge transfer, self-awareness and feedback.
Learning objectives:
The students know the typical changes of the dying phase and are able to assess them and explain them to relatives in a sensitive way.
Students adopt a respectful attitude towards the dying and their accompanying close relatives, taking cultural differences into account where appropriate.
The students practice mindful self-care in connection with challenging conversational situations.
