Our research program is focused on dissecting the molecular and cellular regulation derived from specialized bone marrow microenvironment called “niche” that underlies the self-renewal/survival of normal hematopoietic stem cells and their malignant leukemia stem cell counterparts. In doing so we aim to identify the processes that when dysregulated lead to leukemic transformation and relapse and therefore represent critical therapeutic targets for the clinic. In doing so we aim to identify the processes that when dysregulated lead to leukemic transformation and relapse and therefore represent critical therapeutic targets for the clinic. We will take a multidisciplinary approach grounded in studies with primary human cells and leukemia mouse models that capitalize on functional genetics to characterize fundamental regulatory cancerous niche processes and pre-clinical modelling to identify novel immune and stem cell regulators towards translational development of novel cellular therapies for cancer treatment and regenerative medicine.
