ikidS: Do chronic diseases affect early school success? (BMBF)

Kurzfassung
We aim to assess to which extent chronic medical conditions affect successful adaptation to school and school outcome. Two population-based cohort studies (one new; one already established, N=1000) and one registry-based cohort study (N=500 childhood cancer survivors) will be performed. For the new cohort (settled in two regions of Rhineland-Palatinate) all officially registered 3,500 pre-schoolers and their parents will be approached before school entry and followed-up until the end of the...We aim to assess to which extent chronic medical conditions affect successful adaptation to school and school outcome. Two population-based cohort studies (one new; one already established, N=1000) and one registry-based cohort study (N=500 childhood cancer survivors) will be performed. For the new cohort (settled in two regions of Rhineland-Palatinate) all officially registered 3,500 pre-schoolers and their parents will be approached before school entry and followed-up until the end of the first grade (appr. 1750 participants [50%] are expected). From the preschool examination and a parental questionnaire, the following conditions will be identified: obesity, asthma, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, developmental delay, hearing and visual impairment, epilepsy, insomnia, sleep-disordered breathing, and special health care needs. Data from a birth registry will be used to investigate influence of prenatal and neonatal conditions (e.g. pregnancy-related medical diagnosis, congenital anomalies, preterm birth). Adaptation to school (behaviour, health-related quality of life, sleep) and school outcomes (school behaviour and performance) will be assessed by parental, children’s, and teacher’s questionnaires. The same questionnaires will be used for survivors of early childhood cancer and in a second population-based cohort. Children with chronic conditions in need of further additional health care will be identified to develop strategies for a better adaption to primary school. Intervention strategies will be developed and investigated further in a second part of the project.» weiterlesen» einklappen
