In this project, we aim to evaluate an expectation-focused approach to optimize treatment of patients with major depression. In particular, we are developing a structured cognitive-behavioral therapy program that aims to modify patients’ dysfunctional expectations. Previous research examining patients with anxiety disorders has shown that expectations can effectively modified if patients are exposed to situations where it is likely for them to gain experiences that disconfirm their expectations (“expectancy violation”). Given these promising findings, we aim to transfer this novel treatment approach to the treatment of major depression. In particular, we are testing different therapeutic strategies to prevent patients from engaging in cognitive immunization strategies, thus maximizing expectation change. Furthermore, we are planning to examine differential treatment effects among patients with chronic vs. episodic depressive disorders.
