From the firm’s point of view internationalization is seen as an instrument to increase its per-formance. This perspective is also – at least implicitly – the fundament of every theory about firms’ internationalization. However, empirical research trying to test the respective relation-ship is leaving us with heterogeneous results up to now. The discussion on those studies and their results offers two approaches to deal with the contradictory research outcomes: Some researchers argue that there might be no systematic internationalization-performance relation-ship at all. Others find the 3-Stage Theory of Internationalization to be a general theory with the potential to harmonize the only on the first glance contradictory observations. However, due to conceptual and methodological problems both approaches are up to now not satisfying.
