In the Neuwied basin (Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany) we localized a gravel pit inhabited by water frogs which produced three different types of advertisement calls. Bioacoustic analysis indicated that one of the three advertisement call types was given by lake frogs (P. ridibundus); a second one by edible frogs (P. esculentus). The third advertisement call type has not been described yet and was given by water frogs which resembled morphologically lake frogs. However, allozymic evidence demonstrated that these frogs were hybrids that probably originated from crosses between P. lessonae and P. ridibundus. As they were morphologically distinct from diploid P. esculentus, we suggest that these frogs were triploids with one lessonae and two ridibundus genomes (LRR). This hypothesis has to be proved by caryotyping. This study demonstrates that bioacoustic species diagnosis of water frogs is a useful and unexpensive method for field herpetologists.» weiterlesen» einklappen
