Bringing together the theoretical frameworks of transnational history with imperialism and post-colonialism studies, we revisit the results of two research projects on the settlement house movement and on the history of a childcare agency that were established in the same period in Toronto, Canada. The West End Creche and St. Christopher House are examples of two organisations whose history can only be understood with respect to their transnational connections. Archival research reveals that the transnational activities of these organisations were immense; the imperial connections to Britain and the, often competitive, relations to the USA, were prevalent, as was social reform knowledge from continental Europe. These organisations, the outcome of local and transnational struggles and endeavours, became significant actors in the development of social services in Canada. We conclude with conceptual and methodological considerations for social work research and argue for a radically different framing of social work knowledge with the related set of questions about influences, strategies, resistances and translations. Dieser Aufsatz fokussiert die Entwicklung von lokalen Ideen und Praktiken als Ergebnis der transnationalen Zirkulation von Wissen uber soziale Reform, wie sie zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts im transatlantischen Raum zu beobachten war. Die Ergebnisse zweier Forschungsprojekte zur Geschichte von zwei Einrichtungeneines Settlement-Hauses und einer Kindertageseinrichtung, die zur gleichen Zeit in Toronto, Kanada, gegrundet wurden, werden vor dem theoretischen Hintergrund einer transnationalen Historiographie sowie den imperial und post-colonial studies gegengelesen. Die West End Creche und das St. Christopher Haus sind Beispiele zweier Organisationen, deren Geschichte nur dann verstanden werden kann, wenn ihre transnationalen Verbindungen naher analysiert werden. Unsere Forschung in den Archiven deckt diese transnationalen Aktivitaten auf: Dabei werden insbesondere die imperialen Verbindungen mit Gro ss britannien, die konkurrierende Beziehung zu den USA sowie die weite Verbreitung von Wissen uber soziale Reformen in Kontinentaleuropa deutlich. Diese Organisationen, die das Ergebnis lokaler und transnationaler Bemuhungen und Auseinandersetzungen sind, wurden bedeutsame Akteure in der Entwicklung sozialer Dienstleistungen in Kanada. Zum Schluss des Beitrags werden konzeptionelle und methodologische Reflexionen zur Forschung in der Sozialen Arbeit vorgestellt, in denen wir fur eine deutlich veranderte Konzeption von Wissen in der Sozialen Arbeit vorschlagen und damit auch Fragen zu Begriffen wie Einfluss, Strategie, Widerstand und ubersetzung im Hinblick auf die Forschung zur Zirkulation von Wissen formulieren. » weiterlesen» einklappen
