How can family-owned small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can unlock their sustainable-oriented innovation (SOI) potential? Taking the combined impact of family-owned SMEs into account, they would outperform large enterprises in achieving true sustainability for our society. As the succession phase in family- owned SMEs has been identified as crucial for innovation opportunities, we investigate the absorptive capacities that are needed to implement SOI in 8 succession case studies in Germany. ...How can family-owned small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can unlock their sustainable-oriented innovation (SOI) potential? Taking the combined impact of family-owned SMEs into account, they would outperform large enterprises in achieving true sustainability for our society. As the succession phase in family- owned SMEs has been identified as crucial for innovation opportunities, we investigate the absorptive capacities that are needed to implement SOI in 8 succession case studies in Germany. Within our exploratory multiple-case studies, we conduct more than 50 interviews with founders, different generations, successors, and long-term employees. We find valuable insights for both researchers and practitioners by responding on several researchers’ calls to apply the SOI framework and expand the empirical research on SMEs in this field.
