In the field of cartography, a map is considered to be of high quality when it accurately represents the environment in a comprehensive, understandable, precise, and accurate manner, with regard to the spatial location and relationships of the features depicted. These methodologies reflect space as a system of positional relationships between material objects and reduces social reality as an existing entity of distances. However, it is important to recognize that these are scientific reductions when representing complex social and cultural issues. Maps have the potential to hide or overemphasize certain aspects, while cartographers unintentionally and actively (re-)create geographic “truth”, “reality” and “domination”. Therefore, a critical education in cartography goes beyond technical skills; it addresses the social dynamics that shape the creation and understanding of maps while providing clarity and understanding. This text is aimed at students and teachers of geosciences. It argues that cartographic competence requires a critical discourse on the fundamental principles of cartography. How to teach critical geoinformatics could comprise the deconstruction of (historical) narratives in maps using adaptive iconic analysis together with participatory GIS methods. » weiterlesen» einklappen
