Water affects almost all processes of terrestrial ecosystems; it determines biodiversity, soil and landscape ecosystem functions, and it is the key factor governing food production. The availability of water is, in turn, signifi- cantly affected by diverse land uses. Consequently, there is a close interrelation between ecosystem management on the one hand and the availability of water as a resource on the other hand. This interrelation follows from the interdependency between biological systems and hydrolo- gy. Biological processes linked with the use, quality, availability and storage of water are not even fully understood with respect to individual scienti fic disciplines and so much rarer are interdisciplinary studies on these interactions. Thus, increasing our ability to protect and understand ecosystems and their sustainable management requires the synthesis of biological, hydrological, geo- graphical, biogeochemical and ecological knowledge» weiterlesen» einklappen
