Gothic architects were artists and structural engineers at the same time; geometry determined their artistic practice. But was architecture a science, too? Architectural research was done in the fields of structures and construction by studying collapsing buildings to find their conditions and limitations. Nevertheless, written knowledge was transferred in many different ways. What knowledge Gothic architects actually had, we do not know today, because they themselves did not write. The Gothic period not only symbolizes the complexity of architecture and architectural knowledge, but also the current state of architectural research. Today, it is still difficult to define research in architecture or architectural research. On the one hand it is thought that architects aren’t researching because they apply or develop.
