The international population conference, held in Cairo in 1994, has been a milestone in the re-evaluation of traditional goals and measures of population and development policies. The conference recommended that human development should be based on principles of human rights and sustainability, putting people at the centre of development. The Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development has since been influential in shaping the development agenda and setti...The international population conference, held in Cairo in 1994, has been a milestone in the re-evaluation of traditional goals and measures of population and development policies. The conference recommended that human development should be based on principles of human rights and sustainability, putting people at the centre of development. The Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development has since been influential in shaping the development agenda and setting new priorities, especially in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality. In Sub-Saharan Africa, there has been success in improving health and socio-economic living conditions in most countries. However, a young and still fast growing population causes also challenges for a sustainable future. The article presents recent trends in the field of adolescent marriage, maternal and child mortality as well as access to, and usage of methods of family planning and related fertility levels, all important indicators of the current 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.» weiterlesen» einklappen
