Essential demands for powerful measuring methods to be used for the fatigue assessment of metals in the very high cyle fatigue (VHCF) regime are a sufficiently high resolution of the 20 kHz signal and a mainly contact-free application of the sensors on the specimens in order to prevent coupling and mass effects between the sensor and the ultrasonic resonance system. The new measuring equipment and software package developed at the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Kaiserslautern provides a recording speed of 4x10^6 samples per second and the precise control of the ultrasonic fatigue testing system. Besides strain gages, thermometric and electrical resistance measurements were successfully performed to characterize the cyclic deformation behavior and microstructural changes in metals, e.g. railway wheel steels, at a load ratio of R = -1 under VHCF loading until 10^9 cycles. Additionally, the power, the frequency and the amplitude as essential parameters of the ultrasonic process were detected and controlled.» weiterlesen» einklappen
