This article explains how "tone voids" (missing notes) occur in pipe organs with couplers and/or unified ranks. The percentage of tone voids is calculated for a test chord as an objective measure. by avoiding adjacent octave pitch heights of the same rank on a manual keyboard the percentage can become insignificantly small despite of unification. Several examples of this design priciple for pipe organ specifications are provided.
