The question raised in the title of this text: ‘Would Mary be suited for (a) rebellion?’ is originally the headline of an article in the ‘Christ und Welt’ supplement of the newspaper ‘Die Zeit’. Answering this question is not the primary goal of the present enquiry, though. For it is the concrete medial embedding of the question itself in its specific sites which is the subject matter of the cultural-hermeneutical and exegetical observations of this phenomenon of ‘visible religion’. The views and opinions which can be distinguished in the media and which are inspired by the topical debate around the emancipatory women’s movement in the Catholic Church – not in the last instant by ‘Maria 2.0’ – do show in their current constructions a conflict around religious leadership positions. For sweeping statements about all women are often added to the questions about who this Mary is exactly, and hence about what she can do and is allowed to do. Small wonder that precisely on the basis of frequently stereotypical representations and interpretations of this ‘woman’ – representations which are often based on receptions of the literary Mary of the Bible – the question is raised whether women are capable to be religious leaders in general and in the Catholic Church in particular. In the analysis of these medial readings, which are exemplary for the debate, it will become clear that the references to this literary Mary of Luke either expropriate her prophetic power or empower her, as well as all (other) women in the same gesture. Insofar as such interpretations contradict the biblical findings – to which they refer in their (partly supposedly) shared suppositions of Mary to answer contemporary (woman) questions normatively – the religious studies view-point on the moment of visible religion in question will be correlated with the exegetical-critical perspective on the biblical text. For these medial readings often polemicize precisely against the insights of feminist and liberation theological interpretation, although – or maybe intentionally – these oppositional readings might precisely empower (not only) women to break through these binary perception-schemes here and now.» weiterlesen» einklappen
