The Second Vatican Council understands itself as an ecumenically oriented council. With its pastorally formulated doctrinal texts, it is addressed to the whole Catholic Church, to other Christian churches and communities, as well as to people of other faiths and to non-believers. Through this Council the Catholic Church has modified some important parts of its own theological understanding of Church and World without betraying its enduring tradition.
