Today, an increasing necessity for the simulation of elastomers in the time domain can be observed. The usual time–dependent formulations are based on a heredity or convolution integral with respect to time. Due to this structure in contrast to formulations based on direct time integration by an accumulation of the rates of internal variables, a straightforward computation of viscous dissipation contributions is not possible or incorrect in these systems. This prohibits their usage in damper or tyre applications, e.g. in order to evaluate the self–heating of the components. In this paper, we present an elegant and numerically efficient development and FE–implementation which overcomes this shortcoming and which enables the computation of dissipation in dynamically loaded elastomeric components and leads to reasonable results. Using a prototype example the efficiency and plausibility of this procedure is presented. On dissipation in viscoelastic material models (PDF Download Available).
