Penuel, the biblical site of Jacob's encounter with God, has become an allegory for the theological difficulty of putting the revelation in Jesus Christ into language. At the moment atheism suggests that it occupies Penuel more effectively than Christian theology. Atheism is thus a challenge this study exemplifies with a look at the theses of Christopher Higgins concerning faith as a matter of privacy outside of the sphere of scientific knowledge.
