The roughness length z0 for the Filchncr/Ronne ice shelf is determined experimentally from windprofiles under neutral conditions. Z0 has a mean value of 10-4, but shows large scatter. This can be explained by thc fact that nearly all Z0 values lie in the transitional region bctwccn smooth and rough surfaces in cases without snow drift. During snow drift, the roughness length can be approximated by the Charnock relation.
